What Types of Lesions Does Dr. Khansa Remove?

Dr. Khansa may recommend a lesion excision if a lesion:

  • Has changed in size, shape, color, or texture

  • Bleeds, crusts, drains, or becomes painful

  • Catches on clothing, jewelry, or grooming tools

  • Becomes repeatedly irritated or injured

  • Causes discomfort or limits activity

  • Affects confidence because of its appearance

  • Needs tissue diagnosis after a clinician recommends removal

  • Has returned after a previous procedure

Mole (nevus)

A mole, also known as a birthmark, is due to proliferation of the pigment cells in the skin (melanocytes). Dr. Khansa usually sends moles to pathology after excision to make sure they do not contain abnormal cells that may be suggestive of melanoma.

Scar

A scar may be due to an injury or a previous surgery. Scars cannot be erased completely. However, in some cases, Dr. Khansa can perform scar revisions to improve the appearance of scars. For example, some wide or hypertrophic scars can be excised and re-repaired in order to achieve a better looking scar. Learn more about scar revision here.

Keloid scar

A keloid scar is a specific type of scar that grows beyond the original borders of the scar. Keloid scars can recur after excision. Therefore, Dr. Khansa uses a multi-pronged approach to treat keloids, including excision and steroid injection. Learn more about keloid scar treatment here.

Cyst

A cyst is a enclosed collection of material under the skin. There are different types of cysts, including epidermal cysts, sebaceous cysts, dermoid cysts, and others. Cysts should not be drained. Instead, the best treatment for a cyst is complete removal, to minimize the risk of recurrence.

Lipoma

A lipoma is a benign fatty tumor. Sometimes lipoma become large or cause symptoms, and Dr. Khansa may recommend excision to alleviate those symptoms.

Hemangioma

A hemangioma is a common benign tumor of blood vessels present in infants. Dr. Khansa is an expert in the diagnosis and management of hemangiomas, and uses a multi-pronged approach to the treatment of hemangiomas, including timolol, propranolol, and surgery.
